Dreams as an Aid in the Dying Process

I’m standing up in a yellow bus. I’m looking out the window, there are other people…. I’m saying to myself, “How will I know when I should get off the bus? Will there be someone there to tell me?

.

[The context of the dream:]

While working as  a home care nurse, a patient shared a dream with me…   I had time to ask her if she remembered how she felt in the dream.  She told me she was feeling calm and good in the dream… It was clear to me that while morphine was doing its job in taking care of the physical pain, the dream scenario was reflecting that she was emotionally “standing” at that point in her life.  It was the beginning of my interest in my patient’s dreams.

I did eventually share this woman’s dream with her children after her death. One of them said, “Mom always did stand up, even until the end.”
