Diagnostic Dream: Decomposing Horse

A sixty-one year old cavalry officer dreamed:

An old corporal, who in reality had the meaningful name of Adam, appeared and said to him, “Mr. Lieutenant, I must show you something.”

He led the lieutenant down into the cellar of the barracks and opened a door — made of lead!

The dreamer recoiled with a shudder. In front of him, the carcass of a horse lay on its back, completely decomposed and emanating and awful smell.

According to Von Franz, this man died four weeks later of heart failure.

The symbolism of the decomposing is self-evident. (see the next post for more explanation of the horse as a symbol.)

The terrible smell in the dream does not bode well for the dreamer: other examples of dreams with bad smells in them will be posted shortly.
