Diagnostic Dream: Appendicitis

I dreamt somebody, a hand, was dropping many lead weights in the middle of my stomach. These lead balls came flying down. I could feel the pain of it and was very worried. … Later it seemed I dreamed there was something sticky, like shellac, on my stomach, pulling on the shellac with something like a glass watch crystal. I tried to get the shellac off, it hurt so. I was getting more scared, so I tried to move. I thought it was still a dream because I couldn’t believe it was hurting. Everything hurt that is what woke me up.

A Dream of the Prodromal Phase of Acute Appendicitis;

Psychosomatic Medicine;  Allan Roos, MD.

Dr. Roos comments:

It was my good fortune to be consulted recently about a twelve year old boy who awakened from a remarkable dream about 5:00 o’clock in the morning on April 24, 1942 with sudden severe abdominal pain

It is interesting that the well known migration of the pain of appendicitis, from the umbilicus to the right inguinal quadrant, is clearly visible in the dream content.
